Komorebi – Light Filtered Through Trees

Posted on February 10, 2025September 27, 2025 by admin

Komorebi is a Japanese term meaning ‘sunlight leaking through trees’. It can refer to the feeling of beauty and tranquility of walking through a forest. I have been testing out ways of visually depicting the feeling.

I tried manipulating some photos I took to see the different visual effects and which ones most successfully evoked the mood I was thinking of. I felt that it was the softness of the light coming through the gaps that most expressed the feeling of komorebi, so I produced some oil paintings showing it.

I was wanting to produce something quite abstract so I focused more on colour and the movement of the lines.
